WHY DRAW?

Despite considering myself a ceramic artist - one who deals primarily with clay, whether wheel throwing, hand building, or even slip casting - I think it would be a failure to consider the importance of drawing in my art practice. Drawing, a word which I’ll use loosely to include water color painting, is the first lens through which I see form and shape. As an artist, shape is a pillar of everything I make - and if my sense of shape is best seen through drawings, then it would behoove me to draw. Whether I'm working in my studio, or traveling to a new city, drawing is centered in my experiencing of the space around me. I believe I learn more about my work and myself by considering the two dimensional work as well.
